The Consultation & Education Services (C&E) is dedicated
to informing the community about the educational and developmental
needs of children. Through our outreach programs, we are helping
to erase misunderstandings about individuals with learning
disabilities. Our goal is to help all schools equip their
staff to help these youngsters with the learning strategies
and emotional fortitude to meet their educational challenges
and ultimately succeed.
The C&E team is directed by a child psychologist and
includes child development specialists, speech and language
therapists, educational specialists, school counselors, and
educational diagnosticians. Through the efforts of the C&E
professionals, it is possible to observe a child who is struggling
in school and to identify and design individual strategies
that will allow the student to continue uninterrupted in his/her
current school.
Consultation:
- Conduct on-site consultation services for specific
children attending both public and private schools, pre-school
through high school. Such services may include classroom
observations, informal assessment, evaluations and feedback
to directors, staff and parents in order to help school
personnel identify and better serve children with special
learning needs.
- Provide on-going consultation contracts (short
or long-term) to both public and private schools who seek
to better serve their struggling learners.
- Connect families that need additional support
to appropriate resources (e.g. speech and language therapy,
tutoring or counseling).
Professional Development Seminars:
- Conduct staff and parent seminars to public and
private schools and/or agencies on a variety of developmental
issues and education related subjects. Sample topics include:
- Exploring learning disabilities
- Effective instructional strategies for struggling
learners
- Behavior and classroom management
- Effective writing instruction
- Effective math instruction
- Improving Reading Comprehension
- Teaching vocabulary
- Instituting school-wide assessment
- The Individual Education Plan process
- The Frostig Success Attributes
- Selected topics in early childhood issues
- The 5-day Frostig Summer Institute: Access
to Reading
We strongly believe that NOT all children with learning
disabilities need to attend programs such as the Frostig School.
In-depth C&E support enables teachers to identify struggling
students and expand their instructional strategies. Through
our C&E team we make it possible for a student facing
educational challenges to remain in his or her own school,
when appropriate. As teachers expand their instructional methods
they further enrich the educational opportunities for all
students.
To truly help children with learning disabilities or those
who struggle, we work to foster a collaborative relationship
among all people and agencies who interact with these students
and their families.
